The Best Gift This Holiday? Simply Showing Up

Traditionally, the holidays are a time for giving. When we think of giving, we often picture sales, gifts, malls, and the experiences we plan to share with loved ones. In some cases, these thoughts can spark anxiety, especially if we haven’t had the best year financially.

Our nation just endured a national election where, regardless of party affiliation, the main issue was the economy. A wise person once said, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Despite the national economy being stronger than it has been in years—and the strongest on the planet—many Americans aren’t feeling it in their pocketbooks. This reality, during a time focused on giving, is deeply felt. When our personal economy is affected, it’s easy to think we have nothing to give, to feel ashamed of our financial situation, or sad we can’t give the gifts or experiences we’d like. However, I challenge the idea that material wealth is the only way to give. The week after the election, I received multiple calls from friends, relatives, and colleagues asking how I was doing. They checked in to ensure I was taking care of myself and getting enough rest. These simple gestures reminded me how loved and supported I am Inspired, I decided to pay it forward. The following week, I made a list of 20 people to reach out to, asking about their spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being. To my delight, beautiful connections were reignited. I laughed with some, cried with others, and discovered what was happening in their lives. It was a reminder that giving can be as simple as showing up.

This holiday season, I encourage you to show up for the people you love. Your presence and attention might be the best gift they receive. Giving isn’t about how much you spend—it’s about the value you bring into someone’s life through care, connection, and love.
