Lessons From The Wiz on Courage

In the classic tale of “The Wizard of Oz,” Dorothy and her companions—the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion—embark on a journey to find the Wizard, each seeking something they believe they lack. Dorothy, in her iconic ruby slippers, symbolizes the strength of faith.

Amidst Halloween season, many people choose to dress up as Dorothy or other characters from the tale. I see myself in the likeness of Dorothy. Just like her, we may find ourselves in unfamiliar and sometimes frightening situations. However, Dorothy’s journey teaches us the importance of faith over fear. She faced her fears head-on, accompanied by friends who discovered their own strengths.

Like Dorothy, many of us may find ourselves in situations where we feel lacking. We may yearn for courage, wisdom, or a heart filled with love. In our own lives, we may see the Lion’s struggle to find courage within ourselves. But just as Dorothy discovered that the power to return home was with her all along, we, too, can find the strength we seek within our faith.

The Lion in “The Wizard of Oz” lacked courage, much like many of us in the face of fear. However, he embarked on a journey with Dorothy, discovering that courage was not the absence of fear but the willingness to move forward despite it. Similarly, our faith does not eliminate fear but empowers us to confront it.

As we embrace the Halloween season and navigate the difficulties of life, let us remember the power of FAITH OVER FEAR. By anchoring ourselves in the wisdom of the Holy Bible and trusting in God’s love and guidance, we can confront our wounds, dispel our fears, and find strength in the knowledge that we are never alone on this journey. May faith always triumph over fear in our lives.
