Self-Care and Massage Therapy

As a certified massage therapist with 18+ years of experience and a Kinesiology degree from CSUN, as well as a NASM-certified personal trainer, I understand the importance of staying active, flexible, and eating healthily. As a wife and mother, I strive to model good habits for my 8-year-old son, including respect, discipline, honesty, loyalty, self- care, and self-love. To keep up with the daily demands of life, I prioritize my own well-being by incorporating fitness and massage therapy into my routine. This provides me with a synergistic approach to wellness, allowing me to help my clients and family without experiencing my own physical pain.

Massage therapy and fitness work hand-in-hand to improve health and wellness. Massage therapy can be a vital tool to help recover more rapidly from workout and improves range of motion and flexibility and aids a speedy recovery from injuries. When we have tension in our muscles, they create adhesions, and we don’t have optimal blood circulation and accumulation of lactic acid. Massages can boost the effectiveness in your workouts and muscle imbalances by releasing the muscle fibers that bind up through continuous motion and use.

The benefits of massage therapy are far-reaching, regardless of whether you are healthy or not well. From the physiological aspect, research has shown that massage therapy improves the body’s functioning by increasing blood circulation and decreasing stress and tension, and providing a more restful night’s sleep.

A common benefit of massage therapy is helping the body to achieve and maintain homeostasis or balance across all systems. Stress can contribute to many health problems or conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

We live in a world with lots of work and family demands, and we often forget to take time for self-care and self-love. This is your time to make this happen Moms! By prioritizing your health and self-care, you can better help others in a way that is more effective and even more enjoyable. In our busy world, self-care often takes a backseat to work and family demands. However, prioritizing our health and well-being can actually help us better serve others.

Massage therapy can aid in pain-free movement, as external and internal factors can disrupt our

body’s balance. Repetitive motions and prolonged computer use can hinder our posture and mobility, leading to back and neck pain and even breathing difficulties because our shoulders slump forward and add unnecessary compression to the chest causing a lack of oxygen. Massage therapy acts like a body’s “tune-up,” resetting posture and alignment and improving overall wellness. Don’t let the fast-paced world make you forget to care for yourself. This is where massage therapy can positively affect our body in hitting a reset button in terms of posture and alignment. Is like a body’s “tune-up.”

Massage therapy stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, known as the “rest-digest” system. The parasympathetic system slows down the heart rate and reduces the stress hormone, cortisol. When this system is in charge the body works more efficiently in a resting phase (resting heart rate). A person in the parasympathetic phase will generally feel at ease. I know time is valuable for busy moms, but I hope you can make time for some self-care therapy for our mental health and well-being. If going to the spa seems too much of a commitment, don’t let that stop you from self-care treatment. There are many professionals, such as myself, that do in-home massage therapy! Just a simple phone call and you are booked. This is the one month that we can ask for anything as Mom’s; consider requesting a day of self-care from your loved ones, and start your wellness journey.
