Developing A Servant’s Heart

Are You Willing To Serve This Holiday Season?

As we approach the holiday season most of us start to think about all of the things and all of the ways that we want to receive. I challenge you to make this season more about the Act of Service and actively serving others.

Why is the Act of Service so important?

An act of service is really about someone going above and beyond to support and assist another person in a meaningful way. People feel more cared for, secure, and loved when someone takes the initiative to lessen some of their obligations and burdens.

If you are familiar with Gary Chapman’s book, The Five Love Languages, then you are aware that Acts of Service is one of the ways that people give and receive love. It is a method that some people use to express their love for others, and even though it may not be everyone’s primary love language, serving others with generosity is a crucial component of loving them well. We can do this by working on developing and maintaining the following characteristics that are necessary in cultivating a servant’s heart:

Humility: We must accept and acknowledge our shortcomings as well as our strengths.

Sacrifice: We must be willing to delay our own gratification, and put the needs of others first.

Joy: We must have the ability to serve others with a heart of joy, with no expectation of return.

Developing a servant’s heart is important for us to do in order to become less selfish and more compassionate towards one another, and what better time to practice these acts than over the Thanksgiving holiday when we are showing gratitude towards one another.
